Vicksburg National Military Park is the site of one of the most significant battles during the American Civil War.
Vicksburg National Military Park sustains the historical significance of the Battle of Vicksburg, which took place during the Civil War. The battle lasted for 47 days, and restored trenches and forts can be observed by visitors today to gain a sense of what the layout of the area was like all those years ago. The battle here was so important because Vicksburg was a vital transportation hub for both people and goods. A Union victory here allowed for the isolation of the Confederate states of Texas, Arkansas, and Louisiana.
Vicksburg National Military Park is spread out over a large amount of land, so it is certainly easy to spend several hours here exploring and learning about all the history embedded on these grounds. There are over 1,300 monuments and markers, 20 miles of trenches, a 16-mile road for tours, and a 12.5-mile trail for walking on. Visitors also have the chance to see Civil War-era homes, cannons, and a restored gunboat. There are war reenactors that put on scheduled demonstrations throughout the week, as well. The cost to enter the park is $20 for cars, $15 for motorcycles, $10 for pedestrians and bicycles, and $10 for each individual that arrives via bus or van.
