Watch the migratory birds at this southern Louisiana wildlife refuge.
The Mandalay National Wildlife Refuge is located southwest of New Orleans, Louisiana. It features over 4,000 acres of protected freshwater marshland and natural habitats. Feel free to walk along the nature trail to enjoy scenic overlooks within the refuge. The nature trail is relatively flat and is an out-and-back trail that is 3/4 of a mile long. Please stay on the boardwalks and do not attempt to wade or swim in the water; alligators also live here.
Common bird species you may see include mallard ducks, wood ducks, green-winged teals, gadwalls, mottled ducks, and more. Bald eagles often nest in the cypress trees; look for them if you're here anytime between October and April. In the forested areas, you may even catch a glimpse of mammals such as deer, squirrels, rabbits, foxes, and opossums. The refuge is open daily from sunrise to sunset. If you love nature, be sure to come and see the Mandalay National Wildlife Refuge.
