This state park has geological formations known as shut-ins, which are crystal-clear rocky pools that visitors are welcome to swim in.
Located in the Ozark Mountains, Johnson's Shut-Ins State Park is a place to enjoy all your favorite outdoor pastimes. At nearly 9,000 acres in size, the park's main attraction are the shut-ins, which are unique geologic formation created by the East Fork of the Black River. Over many years, water has carved out a labyrinth of smooth rocks, forming natural water slides, chutes, and pools that visitors can splash around and cool off in (at their own risk). The shut-ins are surrounded by unbelievable scenery, which just adds to the incredible time you’re bound to have here.
Aside from swimming, the park also features a long network of hiking trails that cater to all skill levels. The Shut-Ins Trail is arguably the most popular, and the Taum Sauk Section also connects to this park, which is part of the Ozark Trail. The park's rugged landscapes, dense forests, and diverse wildlife species like the red-bellied woodpecker, eastern cottontail, muskrat, and long-tailed salamander make it a nature enthusiast’s or photographer's dream.
