Visit the oldest wildlife refuge in Mississippi.
The Yazoo National Wildlife Refuge is a nature lover's paradise. It spans over 13,000 acres and is home to alligators, deer, rabbits, squirrels, raccoons, and thousands of migratory birds. All of the trails are for pedestrians only; no motorized vehicles are allowed on the paths. Lizard Lake has an observation platform, which can be accessed via the Holt Collier boardwalk trail. Another point of interest is the butterfly garden. It is the most recent addition to the refuge and has lots of caterpillars and butterflies to see. In the summer, you can also see hummingbirds sipping nectar at the butterfly garden.
Alligators often nest near the lake beginning in June. Please don't disturb their nests and keep a safe distance from the alligators at all times. Bring your binoculars and observe various geese, ducks, marsh wrens, warblers, sandpipers, pelicans, and more as you explore the refuge. Drink plenty of water and use sunscreen and bug spray upon arrival. It gets especially hot and humid in the summer here. Enjoy spending time at this beloved wildlife refuge located in the heart of Mississippi's Delta Region.
