Tour an old military fort and watch firing demonstrations at Fort Delaware.
Fort Delaware State Park is located on Pea Patch Island in the middle of the Delaware River. This American military fort dates back to the mid-1800s and continued to utilize this fort periodically during World War l and ll. Today, the fort has cannon firing demonstrations and often puts on ghost adventure tours. During regular summer tours, expect to see costumed tour guides who will portray life back in the late 1800s and bring the fort's history to life. Other activities available at Fort Delaware include picnicking, bird watching, and hiking. If you enjoy nature, explore the prison camp trail to see the herons and egrets from the bird observation tower.
This state park is typically open from the end of April through Labor Day weekend; please check its website for the most up-to-date hours and fees. You must take the Delaware Ferry to reach the fort, and you can purchase ferry tickets in advance. If you want to buy same-day tickets, head to the ticket office or call their phone number to check availability. Please note that this is not a pet-friendly park, and all guests must wear close-toed shoes due to the uneven terrain at the fort. Anyone interested in American military history should consider visiting Fort Delaware.
