Walnut Canyon National Monument preserves the early history of the Native Americans who once lived in this part of Arizona. This national monument is located 10 miles southeast of Flagstaff and features incredible ruins. Walnut Creek created the 600-foot deep canyon, which has a rich geological makeup. The top layer of the canyon consists of Kaibab limestone, and cave dwellers in the 12th and 13th centuries used to live here.
Hikers can take either the Rim Trail or Island Trail to see the monument. The Rim Trail is 0.7-miles long and takes you past several ruins. Island Trail is more challenging and is one mile long, leading into the canyon. Please do not enter the ruins, but admire them from a distance as you discover the ancient history at this monument.
