See these incredibly preserved cliff dwellings in Arizona.
Early settlers of the area assumed this ancient cliff dwelling was built by the Aztecs, but the Sinagua Native American tribe actually created Montezuma Castle. Montezuma Castle is one of the country's top ancient cliff dwellings, and it was built over 800 years ago. It is encased in limestone about 70 feet off the ground and contains 20 rooms. Access to the castle is 2 miles off Interstate 17, north of Camp Verde. A short, paved trail leading from the Visitors Center offers views of this impressive structure.
About 50 feet west of the castle is a ruin called Castle B, containing a few basic rooms. The landscape surrounding the path features local desert plants and cacti. You are welcome to use the picnic site near the visitor center, where the sycamore trees provide shade and you can see a scenic overlook of Beaver Creek. Enjoy walking the loop trail and taking pictures at this historic national monument.
