Explore a red rock desert landscape at this national monument.
Wupatki National Monument is located in northern Arizona off of US Highway 89. It has several scenic and easy hiking trails. Each trail is less than one mile long (round-trip) and features old pueblo ruins and unique geological structures. One of the natural phenomenons here is the blowhole found at the Wupatki Pueblo Trail. This blowhole shoots out when the air is warm and seemingly sucks in air when it is cool and dense. There are several other blowholes throughout the area and it is estimated that the blowholes were formed between 80 and 40 million years ago when two faults were colliding. The huge crack system runs for miles and has billions of cubic air space under the ground.
The visitor center is open daily from 9 am to 4:30 pm but the monument grounds are open from sunrise to sunset. If you're looking for a scenic family-friendly attraction in Flagstaff, look no further than the Wupatki National Monument.
