Venture a path containing lava rock formations and stunning views of Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument.
This is an easy family-friendly hike which is located at the bottom of the Sunset Crater Volcano. Visitors are not allowed to hike on the volcano itself for safety reasons. The trail is a one-mile long loop that is partially paved (1/4 of the loop) for those requiring wheelchair access. Structures such as lava rocks can be seen along the trail. The San Francisco Peaks are visible at the peak of the trail, in addition to many desert plants and animal species. Bird watching is also a common activity.
The trail is also lined with various informational plaques describing the history of the area and the volcano. Dogs are not allowed so please leave them at home if you plan to visit. Stay hydrated but do not leave trash or food on the trail. The lava flow trail is open daily year-round from sunrise to sunset.
