Visitors to the Sunset Crater Volcano will get to learn about this cinder cone volcano that last spewed lava over 900 years ago. This national monument has picnic tables, RV parking spots, several hiking trails, and a scenic landscape. Avid hikers should try the Lava's Edge Trail, which is over 3-miles long. More accessible hikes can be found around the base of the volcano are ideal for families and less experienced hikers. There is also a long scenic loop if you'd rather stay in your car during your visit.
The visitor center is open daily from 9 am to 4:30 pm, and the monument and trails are open from sunrise to sunset. Animals you may see while hiking include hawks, ravens, mule deer, squirrels, lizards, porcupines, prairie dogs, and chipmunks.
