Enjoy the open air and beautiful natural scenery at the Denison Pequotsepos Nature Center.
Open since 1946; the Denison Pequotsepos Nature Center is a conservation and education wildlife sanctuary located in Mystic, Connecticut. The center boasts 10 miles of hiking trails to explore, including woodlands, wetlands, and meadow habitats. It is a perfect place for bird watching, plant identification, hiking, and landscape photography. Enjoy searching for bluebirds, turtles, bullfrogs, and various wildflowers throughout the property. The center also houses various owls, hawks, and falcons that are unable to live in the wild, as well as other animals being rehabilitated for future release.
Guests can also visit the Coogan Farm, located on the property, which holds two watersheds, and other historic structures. This area focuses on public land ethics, where you can learn about issues such as overdevelopment, water quality, and loss of biodiversity. Scheduled tours are available to explore the Gungywamp, a complex of stone structures dating back to the early Native American era. No primary source documentation mentions stone structures being built by Native Americans before European settlement, making the Gungwamp a bit of a mystery.
The Denison Pequotsepos Nature Center is proud of its education programs and engagement with the public. They have various summer programs, early childhood programs, gardening programs, and a nature preschool. The center is open Monday through Saturday from 9 am to 4 pm, and Sunday from 10 am to 4 pm. Admission is $5 for ages 3-12, $8 for adults, and $5 for seniors age 65+. Discover the natural beauty and diversity at the Denison Pequotsepos Nature Center.
