See this 58-foot tall lighthouse, said to be haunted by a previous lighthouse keeper.
The New London Ledge Lighthouse was established in 1909. An automated lighting system was installed back in 1987. Before that time, the Coast Guard ran the lighthouse, and many crew members saw unexplained things happening, such as doors slamming and the TV turning on and off by itself. A local legend of a previous lighthouse keeper is one explanation of these strange events, and it seems that a ghost (nicknamed Ernie) has been known to haunt this lighthouse. The New London Ledge Lighthouse has been on the National Register of Historic Places since 1990.
Located between the Race Rock and New London Harbor lighthouses, the New London Ledge lighthouse features a distinctive 3-story square brick structure complete with windows. To learn even more about this and other lighthouses, you may also want to visit the Custom House Maritime Museum in Newbury Port, Massachusetts. The museum offers lighthouse tours and is open year-round.
