This one-of-a-kind ice museum is made out of 1,000 tons of locally harvested ice.
Located at the Chena Hot Springs Resort in Fairbanks, the Aurora Ice Museum is the world’s largest year-round ice environment and makes for quite the enchanting activity. Step into the icy wonderland and explore the intricate sculptures, chill out on furniture carved out of ice, and grab a tasty drink at the ice bar. The museum is comprised of 1,000 tons of ice and snow that was all harvested from the area!
The temperature of the museum is kept at a constant 25°F to preserve the sculptures and parkas are provided to guests free of charge. For the warmer summer months, the museum has a state-of-the-art absorption chiller to keep everything perfectly frozen. Walking around the museum, you’ll notice atmospheric lights designed to resemble the Northern Lights illuminate the ice, making it feel even more magical inside. Visitors can take guided tours to find out more about the art of ice sculpting and what goes into keeping a building made out of ice standing all year long!
The Aurora Ice Museum is truly a one-of-a-kind place that is definitely worth a visit the next time you’re in the Fairbanks region. The rest of the Chena Hot Springs Resort is also exceptional with its beautiful location, healing hot springs, and cozy accommodations. If you’re lucky, you may even get to see the Aurora Borealis light up the night sky during your time in Alaska, and this is known for being one of the best places in the state to catch it!
