Museum of Alaska Transportation

This museum showcases the history of the transportation industry in Alaska and the impact it had on the state.

The Museum of Alaska Transportation and Industry is located in Wasilla, Alaska, and was established in 1967. This museum aims to educate the public about the history of how the transportation industry evolved in Alaska to help reach its quality natural resources. Roads, steamboats, railroads, and eventually aircrafts were all brought to the Last Frontier with the goal to exploit the resources. When resources became depleted and the technology outdated, the equipment was typically left behind in the Alaska wilderness since it was too impractical to remove.

The museum was opened to act as a home for the relics of the transportation equipment as well as a place to teach the public about how this industry helped shape the state and serve as a catalyst for growth. There is a sizeable gallery within the museum, which sits on 20 acres of land, as well as many outdoor artifacts, a train yard, and an intriguing exhibit hall. This is a wonderful place to come explore and learn about the history of this state as a whole and see genuine artifacts that you won’t come across anywhere else. The museum is open between the dates of Mother’s Day and Labor Day from the hours of 10 until 5. Admission is $8 for adults, $5 for seniors and those between the ages of 3 and 17, and free for active military. The museum also offers $5 admission for everyone each week on Thursday.
