Learn about one of the tragic battles during the Great Plains wars.
The Washita Battlefield National Historic Site is located in western Oklahoma, about 2.5 hours away from Oklahoma City. On November 27, 1868, General Custer led a surprise attack against the Cheyenne Native American tribe. There is a trail located half a mile west of the visitor center where you can see 15 different points of interest to help you learn about this historic site. This outdoor trail is ADA accessible for about half of the trail, but the other half is uneven and unmaintained during the winter. The Washita Battlefield Park Trail is 1.5 miles long and follows a loop.
Guests are also welcome to explore the paved trail situated just outside the visitor center. As you explore the Dust and Fire Trail, you will see a dugout house, a windmill, and a native garden. Please note that the visitor center is open daily (except Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years Day) from 8 am to 4:30 pm. The trails are open year-round from 30 minutes before sunrise to 30 minutes after sunset.
