The Fort Hays State Historic Site is located off of Interstate 70 in Hays, Kansas. It used to be comprised of 45 buildings; however, only a few remain standing. Visitors can tour the officers' quarters, guardhouse, blockhouse, and visitor center to learn about the events that occurred here. This 19th-century historical frontier fort was active until 1889 and generals such as George Custer, Nelson Miles, and even Buffalo Bill served here. Fort Hays was established to protect railroad workers from the Native Americans inhabiting the region during the time of the westward expansion.
This historic site is open Wednesday through Saturday from 10 am to 5 pm. Admission is $6 per adult and $3 per child. Groups with 10+ people can take advantage of discounted admission rates.
