Enjoy the sights and sounds of nature in Long Island.
The Target Rock National Wildlife Refuge overlooks Huntington Bay along the northwestern section of Long Island, New York. Visitors often enjoy hiking along the 1.75-mile nature trail to see the native wildlife and plants. Be on the lookout for wild turkey, white-tailed deer, red foxes, and other forest creatures. Common songbirds that live here include cardinals, Carolina wrens, warblers, and more. Feel free to stop at the bird blind near the lake and enjoy watching the migratory birds such as ducks, herons, and egrets during the day.
The nature trail eventually leads to a beach where you can see shorebirds, harbor seals, and other wildlife. Anglers with current fishing licenses can fish from the shore for striped bass, bluefish, porgy, summer flounder, and others. This wildlife refuge is open daily from 30 before sunrise until 30 minutes after sunset, and a $4 entrance fee is required for each vehicle. They advise everyone to wear bug spray and remain on the path to avoid ticks and poison ivy. If you love the outdoors and need a place to get away from the big apple, look no further than Target Rock National Wildlife Refuge.
