Tour this unique plantation in eastern Virginia.
In 1790, residents of the Southall's Plantation were Furneau Southall, his wife, and their seven children. They hired 16 enslaved people, named Amy, Bess, Bristol, Citty, Dick, Dublin, Jack, Kate, Lucky, Nutty, Patsey, Pompy, Peter, Rippins, Rose, and Silvia. The Southall family lived at the plantation until 1857 when Furneau's grandson, John Seth Stubblefield, sold part of the property to Edmund Archer Saunders. A log cabin on the property was converted, enlarged, and used as a store. The store became a general merchandise business known as Piney Grove Store. After the Civil War, Saunders moved to Richmond. Thomas Fletcher Harwood ran Piney Grove Store from 1874 to 1915. In 1905, he added on and modified the building into a five-bedroom home. During Harwood's ownership, the property also had an office for his son, Dr. Ashton Harwood, who was a physician.
The grounds of the plantation have the Harwood family children's cemetery surrounded by elaborate cast-iron fencing. Original outbuildings on the property include a smokehouse, chicken house, and pole sheds where they stored farm equipment. Self-guided grounds tours include the gardens, exhibits, and a nature trail. On Saturdays or by appointment for groups, guided "Tours by the Owners" allow guests to see all five historic buildings, gardens, and the grounds.
The historic B&B is a great place to stay while visiting the area. The rooms are decorated with antique furniture with country details such as hand-knit blankets. All guest rooms include private bathrooms, mini-fridges, and a coffee maker. They offer a mint julep when you arrive and you can enjoy wood fires, a pool, lawn games, and a candlelight plantation breakfast in the 1790 Log Room.
