Visit the home of the nation's first president.
Mount Vernon is the former plantation of George Washington. He was a general in the Revolutionary War, the first President of the United States, an entrepreneur, master equestrian, and an innovative agriculturist. He began running Mount Vernon in 1754 and over the next 45 years, slowly added to the home to create the 21 room residence you see today. Washington was very involved with each of the additions and renovations by advising on everything from design, decoration, and construction. This was George Washington's beloved home, the source of his wealth, and the mark of his status as a leading member of the Virginia planter elite. George Washington, his wife Martha, and 25 other family members are entombed at Mount Vernon. It is a National Historic Landmark.
Come learn about his farming methods, see the blacksmith shop, and take a step back in time to experience the origins of our country. There are agricultural demonstrations and animals just like Washington kept at his plantation and a large distillery that he ran after leaving the White House. There are 4 gardens and 40 acres full of memorials to honor all the men, women, and children that worked at the plantation. This historic mansion is kept just like it was upon George Washington's death in 1799. George Washington's Mount Vernon is open daily from 9 am - 5 pm. Please note that leashed pets are allowed on the grounds, but not inside the estate. If you enjoy learning about American history, a visit to Mount Vernon will be worth your time.
