This beautiful and majestic structure is awe-inspiring in its simplicity and size.
The Washington Monument is 555 feet tall and was the tallest building in the world when it was completed. Built to honor the first president of the United States, George Washington, it is an icon of freedom and the centerpiece of American history. This majestic monument is located in the center of the National Mall and shines both day and night. The Washington Monument took 40 years to complete with a 23 year break in the middle. Construction began in 1848 but was halted in 1854 due to lack of funds and the impending Civil War. Construction resumed in 1879, and visitors can see a distinct color difference in the marble showing where the two phases of construction are evident.
There is metered street parking close by and paid parking garages a bit further. The Washington Monument is inspiring to look at from the outside and features amazing views from the top. On the elevator ride down, you can see the inside of the monument. Tickets are available up to 90 days in advance. Fifty American flags surround the base of the monument. Early mornings and early evenings are the most beautiful and tranquil times to visit. It is a short walk to the Lincoln Memorial, Korean War Memorial, Vietnam War Memorial, and The MLK Memorial.
