This water-powered grist mill is one of the oldest in the United States and still produces products like flour and cornmeal today.
The Old Wye Grist Mill and Museum is a historically significant spot that can be found in the small town of Wye Mills, Maryland. The Wye Mill happens to be one of the oldest continuously run water-powered grist mills in the entire country. It was built in the late 1600s and even helped grind flour for George Washington’s troops during the American Revolution. The mission of the museum organization is to preserve the remarkable history of this mill and to educate the public on the importance of it.
Today, the mill is open through late April until early November and grinds on the first and third Saturdays of each month. Millers are also here to explain the process for those that come to watch. Outside of this season, the shop is still open for visitors that want to come purchase any of the flour or other products that are made here. The Old Wye Grist Mill and Museum is a very important part of our nation’s history and helps to inform people about this age-old practice and the many different impacts – such as the economic, technological, and nutritional impacts – that the Wye Mill has had and continues to have on the United States.
