This national wildlife refuge is home to over 240 migratory birds and other species of wildlife.
The Eastern Neck National Wildlife Refuge is situated in a remote region of eastern Maryland and was established in the 1960s as a safe place for migratory birds. The refuge is comprised of 2,285 acres and is made up of several different types of environments such as marshes, grasslands, and forests. An estimated 240 different bird species come to visit the refuge, including the tundra swan and bald eagles. This is truly the ideal place for avid birdwatchers to come during the peak seasons. Many other wildlife species call Eastern Neck home for at least a portion of the year, too. There are 7 different trails along the Chester River and the Chesapeake Bay that offer visitors incredible views and opportunities to see fascinating wildlife and plant species.
There is a visitor’s center also located here that has various exhibits on display that help explain the territory a bit more and the history of the refuge. There is a butterfly garden located on the Bayview Trail where hundreds of stunning butterflies come to enjoy the flowers during the summer months. Aside from exploring the trails and viewing the natural beauty the refuge offers, visitors are able to enjoy other activities such as fishing, hunting during certain times of the year, and of course photography.
