Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center

This massive wildlife refuge has been a safe place for migratory birds to come stay since the 1930s.

The Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge was officially established in 1933 as a sanctuary for migratory waterfowl. The refuge spans across 32,000 acres, allowing ample space for the many birds and other wildlife species that come here for refuge. There is great diversity present at the Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge, with varying habitats and vegetation. You will discover marshes and forests here at the refuge, which help provide storm protection for surrounding areas. The refuge is also home to the biggest population of Delmarva peninsula fox squirrels.

This is a birders' paradise, and you certainly don’t want to forget your binoculars and photography gear when you pay a visit to the Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge. Depending on the time of year, some of the bird species you might have the chance to see include geese, swans, great blue herons, robins, osprey, wild turkeys, and bald eagles. There are 5 miles of hiking trails available to visitors, waterways to paddle through on your kayak, and there is also a 3.6-mile wildlife drive if you don’t want to explore by foot. This refuge is a true gem in the state of Maryland and a day spent here is definitely necessary if you’re in the area.
