Climb to the top of the oldest lighthouse on the Chesapeake Bay.
After 3 months at sea, 105 English settlers arrived and named the area Cape Henry after Prince Henry. After landing on April 26, 1607, they explored the area and set up a cross on the beach to give thanks for their safety. Then they proceeded up the James River. The lighthouse was built in 1792 on the landform marking the southern entrance to the Chesapeake Bay in Virginia. This is a significant location due to a large amount of ocean shipping traffic for the harbors, rivers, and shipping headed to ports on the Bay.
There are 191 steps to the top of this lighthouse, the third oldest lighthouse in the United States. Admission is $10 for adults, and everyone over 42 inches tall is allowed to climb to the top. Young children cannot be carried to the top. Combination tickets allow access to the tower; these cost $14 per person. Soak in the beauty of Chesapeake Bay by visiting one of the oldest lighthouses.
