This national memorial commemorates the important first flights that the Wright Brothers completed in the Outer Banks.
The Wright Brothers National Memorial, located in Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina, commemorates the infamous Wright Brothers, who changed the course of history with their successful first flights in an aircraft. Wilbur and Orville Wright, who were from Ohio, spent a large amount of time in the Outer Banks of North Carolina conducting flight experiments since the dunes here presented the perfect conditions with the wind, the seclusion, and the wide-open landscapes of sand. The memorial honors the historical flights, the role the Outer Banks played in helping them achieve this incredible feat, and the place the brothers called home while they worked on this remarkable dream of theirs.
The Wright Brothers National Memorial is managed by the National Park Service and it serves as the perfect place to spend a few hours of your time if you’re in the area. Kids and grown-ups alike can have a blast here learning all about the first successful flights and seeing the sculptures and replicas of the planes the Wright Brothers flew. Passes to the memorial cost $10 for adults (16+) and admission is free for everyone 15 and under. The park is open every day from 9 am until 5 pm.
