This life-saving station is one of the few complete stations in the US that still stands today.
The Chicamacomico Life-Saving Station is a historical site that is also one of the few complete life-saving stations in the country. It officially opened in 1874 and is located in the village of Rodanthe on Hatteras Island, which is part of the Outer Banks in North Carolina. Here at the site, there is a museum that provides education to its visitors regarding the remarkable history associated with the life-saving station through exhibits and artifacts. The organization that manages the site is dedicated to the preservation, education, and restoration of this important place. Even with all of the detrimental storms this region of the country has faced over the years, the site still stands and serves as the perfect symbol of resilience and reminds us of the incredible sacrifices that those in the US Life-Saving Service made.
The Chicamacomico Life-Saving Station is open from mid-April through the month of November. It’s closed on Saturday and Sunday, but Monday through Friday it’s open from 10 until 5. Admission is $8 for adults, $7 for seniors (62+), $6 for children (6-17), and free for those 5 and under. A visit to this site will provide you with a wealth of knowledge and appreciation regarding this area’s notable past.
