Discover this quaint Hawaiian lighthouse established in 1913.
The Kilauea Lighthouse is located on the northern coast of Kauai, Hawaii. This structure is just 52 feet tall, which is relatively small compared to most lighthouses in the nation. The reason it didn't have to be as tall is the fact that it sits on a peninsula that is 180 feet above the Pacific Ocean. At the time of its construction, three lighthouse keeper homes were also established on site. It was in operation for over 60 years and eventually had an automated beacon put in place, making lighthouse keeping no longer necessary.
Kilauea Lighthouse was restored to its former beauty around 2013, 100 years after it was built. This lighthouse is not currently functioning anymore, but its light used to illuminate 22 miles out to sea and also helped guide planes that were flying up to 90 miles away from the area. Tours of the lighthouse aren't available very often, so check their website for the most up-to-date information. If you're visiting Kilauea, come and enjoy the views from this historic lighthouse.
