Hike through lush vegetation leading to the Iao Needle, a natural structure taller than Seattle's Space Needle.
Iao Valley State Park is home to the towering Iao Needle, known to locals as Kuka‘emoku. This natural feature is made of volcanic rock and is 1,200 square feet. Luscious vegetation covers its rocky outer layer, creating some of the greenest and most peaceful spots on the island of Maui. The entire park has about ten miles of trails, but only 0.6 miles is paved to allow all visitors access to the photogenic view of the Iao Needle.
The botanical garden and rocky formations also hold a rich heritage. For instance, the Battle of Kepaniwai was fought on location in 1970, from which the Kamehameha forces defeated the Maui Army. Many refer to this area as the West Maui Mountains. This tropical state park is a top-rated place that locals and visitors love. Explore this beautiful piece of landscape in Maui, Hawaii with friends and family.
