Take a ride on the world's shortest and steepest railroad.
The Fenelon Place Elevator is located in eastern Iowa. It is a historic cable car railway that is just shy of 300 feet long leading 189 feet up to Fenelon Place. Once passengers reach the top, they can see downtown Dubuque, Iowa, the Mississippi River, Wisconsin, and Illinois. The idea behind this unique elevator came because of a local businessman J. K. Graves who wanted a shorter route to get home. It was built in 1882 but was sadly burned down a couple of years later. Once Graves rebuilt the elevator, he allowed other people to ride it for just 5 cents each.
This unique Iowa attraction is open seasonally from April 1 to November 30 (closed on Thanksgiving Day). During operation, it is open daily from 8 am to 10 pm. Please note that they only accept cash and you pay for the ride at the top. Rates are $2 for an adult one-way trip and $4 round-trip. Children ages 5 to 12 cost $1 one-way and $2 for round-trip. Babies and toddlers ages 0 to 4 are free.
