Apostle Islands National Lakeshore is any outdoor lover’s absolute dream come true. Situated along Lake Superior on the northern tip of Wisconsin’s Bayfield Peninsula, the 21 islands and nearly 70,000 acres that make up this national lakeshore feature dramatic cliffs, quiet beaches, magnificent sea caves, and 8 lighthouses, which is the largest collection in the entire National Park system.
There are no shortages of amazing sights and unforgettable activities to keep your itinerary full while visiting the Apostle Islands. With summer and early autumn being the best times of year to visit, pastimes like kayaking through the sea caves, sunbathing and swimming at the many beaches, hiking the 50 miles of trails, boating, fishing for trout and salmon, wildlife observing, scuba diving, and sleeping under the stars at the secluded campsites found on 18 of the islands.
There is plenty to do on the mainland portion of the park, but if you’re looking to explore the various islands, visitors will either need to boat, kayak, or book a ferry over. There are remarkable old growth and hardwood forests all over the Apostle Islands, which are bound to leave you in awe and with a sense of appreciation for our wonderful world. Wildlife like whitetail deer, the American marten, beavers, black bears, waterfowl, hawks, and spotted salamanders can be seen around the park if you keep a keen eye out!
