Devil's Courthouse

This short yet steep trail is named after a unique and jagged rock formation on the side of the mountain here.

Devil’s Courthouse Trail is a 1-mile loop that’s located about 30 minutes outside of Asheville, North Carolina, and at milepost 422.4 on the Blue Ridge Parkway. This trail was given its name based on the apparently sinister-looking rock formation that can be found here. There are also ancient tales and legends told by the Cherokee Indians that explain why the mountain got its name. It’s a steep half-mile hike up, but thankfully the majority of the trail is paved which makes the task of climbing much more doable. You’ll receive breathtaking views of the rugged and lush landscapes that surround you.

When you take on the Devil’s Courthouse Trail, you’ll get to hike amongst balsam firs and rare high-altitude plants. It’s crucial these rare plants are preserved as much as possible, so it’s important to stay only on the hiking path provided so they won’t be disturbed. There have also been sightings of peregrine falcons near the lookout area at the top, so keep your eyes peeled! This is one of the best ways to get outside if you’re driving along the Blue Ridge Parkway, and you are guaranteed to be met with some of the most unforgettable views possible.
