Learn the history of Chandler, Texas, at their local museum.
The Chandler Museum is housed in a historical mansion called "The Yarborough House". The owner of the home was Charles Richard Yarborough. He bought the residence in 1903 after marrying his wife, Nannie Jane Spear, in 1889. The couple had 11 children, 5 of which were born inside this house. Ralph W. Yarborough was one of the couple's sons and served as a United States Senator from 1957 to 1970.
This museum features displays from the military, railroad, commerce history, education, arts, and more dating back to as early as 1880. The rooms have different themes such as the Telephone Switchboard Room with a partial replica of the Chandler telephone office of Fannie Jones, who operated the Chandler switchboard from 1923 to 1969. You can also see a Military Room dedicated to citizens of Chandler that have served in the military, politics, state, nation, and the community. It has a collection of Senator Ralph Yarborough memorabilia among items from several wars and conflicts.
If you need a bite to eat, stop by the museum café. It is available by reservation only and can seat up to 12 people for tea. Be sure to visit the Chandler Museum the next time you're traveling through eastern Texas.
