The Gulf Coast Bird Observatory is an independent non-profit organization that strives to keep the protection of several bird species and their habit. The protection of the habitat will help the legacy continue by allowing scientists to study, educate, and share this unique opportunity with the general public. The Gulf Coast Bird Observatory is a combination of eight different bird observatory protection groups along the Gulf Coast that has merged into one. All groups have the common goal of protecting the birds and their habitat as well as educating others about these topics. Together they are able to expand their efforts. The observatory depends on donations to continue the great work of protection of the birds and habitat, along with educational opportunities for the public. The general public can participate in donation opportunities, one of which is the adoption of the Oystercatcher bird. Patrons who choose to adopt can witness a banding with a specialized locator device and receive updates about their adopted bird. Other donation opportunities include participating in events, purchasing items from the Nature Store, and more. The Nature Store has a variety of merchandise available to purchase, including bird feeders, gifts, souvenirs, apparel, native plants, and educational books.
