Observe living butterflies fluttering around you as you enjoy the rushing sound of the 50-foot waterfall in the rainforest conservatory.
Located in the Houston Museum of Natural Science, the Cockrell Butterfly Center is a place that the whole family can enjoy. This butterfly center features a living butterfly habitat as well as preserved specimens. The rainforest conservatory is 3 stories high, built around a 50-foot waterfall, and filled with exotic plants and gorgeous live butterflies. The butterflies have been imported from butterfly farms around the world. As you make your way through the conservatory, you will witness butterflies fluttering around you and some sipping nectar or fruit juices. Sometimes they will take a break and alight on visitors. Some great photo opportunities are available while watching these amazing creatures!
Visit the exhibition that is surrounding the rainforest conservatory for a thorough look at arthropods. Here, you will find living and mounted specimens plus interactive games and large models. They even have a giant wasp nest, Houston's largest cockroaches, and a chrysalis corner where you may witness a butterfly materialize! The lower level is all about insects and different civilizations that include certain insects as part of their diets. If you would like to, stop by the insect vending machine to try some of the tasty snacks!
The main level is the Land of Beyond, where you can play in an area that resembles a giant beehive. This is a great place where children and adults of all ages can enjoy their time. Be sure to stop by the next time you're in the Houston area.
