Search for stunning minerals at this mine in upstate New York.
The Ace of Diamonds Mine & Campground is about halfway between Syracuse and Albany, New York. This place is owned and operated by the Smith family, who have been in business for over 50 years. Herkimer's "diamonds" are clear quartz crystal minerals that were formed over thousands of years inside dolomite limestone rock formations. Bring your own hammers, chisels, or garden tools to dig in the mine and collect your own Herkimer crystals to take home. You can also rent tools and buckets from their Rock Shop. If you want to stay overnight at a campsite, be sure to call their office to make reservations.
They are open seasonally from April 1 through October 31 every day, even when it rains. The mine is open from 9 am to 5 pm and it has a picnic area where you can take a break after digging for the crystals outside. Feel free to buy some souvenirs at the gift shop or grab a cold drink before you go. This is a unique family-friendly attraction where people of all ages can enjoy themselves.
