Tour Sinking Spring Farm, the birthplace of Abraham Lincoln.
In Hodgenville, Kentucky, the Lincoln family lived on what was called the Sinking Spring Farm. The Sinking Spring located on the property is a natural spring filtered by limestone, which is still there. It was the Lincoln family water source that is naturally pure and clean. The birthplace unit features 116 acres with hiking trails and information plaques, plus outdoor picnic areas. The memorial is impressive, with 56 stairs leading to the entrance, each stair representing a year of Abraham Lincoln's life. The cornerstone of the building was set on the 100th anniversary of his birth, in 1909.
The outside of the memorial is granite, and the inside is made out of marble. Inside the memorial, you will see a symbolic cabin patterned after the one Abraham Lincoln's family would have occupied. It is a one-room cabin with a fireplace and a small loft where the children would have slept. The window openings would be left uncovered in warmer months and covered with oilcloth or quilts in the winter months. Also inside the memorial is the Lincoln family bible that Abraham's mother would read from. Other displays include a bust of Lincoln, a statue of the family, period tools, and household items. There is a theater that shows a 15-minute video and a gift shop on-site as well. Knob Creek farm is a short distance away, where the Lincoln's moved after leaving Sinking Spring Farm. This place is perfect for history buffs and welcomes all ages to come and visit.
