Explore this breathtaking canyon full of colorful sandstone.
The Wave is a highly sought-after location for adventurers, photographers, geographers, and outdoor enthusiasts. It comprises multiple layers of rock featuring different shades of red, yellow, pink, orange, etc. These layers are incredibly smooth and look as if a large stream has been waving through, creating delicate impressions and resembling a frozen, ocean wave.
When you visit, the hike is just over 6-miles long round trip, and navigating can be quite challenging for inexperienced hikers. It is located in the backcountry wilderness section of Coyote Buttes. You will be crossing different types of terrain, and there is a lack of shade, so please come prepared accordingly. Many hikers have found themselves in an extended all-day adventure due to the absence of a formal hiking trail. Due to the high amount of popularity, a capacity is limited to only 48 people per day, and a permit is required to enter. Permits are awarded by lottery, with half of them done online 4 months in advance, and the other half comes from onsite at the BLM visitors center. The BLM also provides maps and guides including GPS coordinates, to help hikers along their way to this glorious ocean of multicolored sandstone.
