Discover this 200-foot waterfall in the Grand Canyon area.
Mooney Falls is magical. To see and experience Mooney Falls, visitors need to have a permit. Begin at the Havasu Falls trailhead in Arizona. The best times to visit the falls are in the late fall, winter, or early spring. It can get very hot in the summer months, so it would be best to hike as early as possible to avoid the heat. The Havasu Canyon is open for visitors year-round, with the peak tourist season occurring from May through September.
The water is a blue-green color due to the large amounts of calcium carbonate in the water. Limestone all along the creek also reflects the color. A great place to camp while visiting is the Havasupai Campground. From there, the hike to the falls is about 10 miles. It can be busy and crowded on the trail and is ideal for those without a fear of heights in good physical condition. The waterfall was named after a man that fell while making the climb in 1882 before the trail was made. Mooney Falls is the tallest of all the waterfalls in Havasupai. All visitors require reservations before arrival, and because of the distance, it cannot be hiked all in one day. Take a look at the Havasupai Tribe website to make reservations for your visit.
There are other options for those who would love to see Mooney Falls without hiking, such as a helicopter tour, mule ride, or even a guided horseback riding tour. If you decide to make the hike, prepare ahead, and bring all necessary items with you. Visitors will need a bathing suit, water shoes, chapstick, sunscreen, hiking boots, plenty of water, sunglasses, snacks, a camera, first aid kit, day pack, headlamp, jacket, towel, other clothing items. This is a beautiful area and an adventurer's dream.
