Tour one of the only historic Italianate-style homes in the southern United States.
The historic Lowry house is located off of Interstate 565 in downtown Huntsville. This home used to be a two-bedroom log cabin when it was first built. During the early 1800s, the property became home to a large plantation and lavish house. It has been on the national register of historic places since 2001, after an extensive renovation project. Everything you see is original to the house. As you walk in, you will notice a large staircase, an intricate chandelier hanging from the ceiling, and fine wood furnishings all around. The staircase is made out of chestnut and oak. Even after all these years, you won't hear the stairs creak as you walk on them.
Regular hours are Monday through Friday from 12 pm to 4 pm. Feel free to call ahead to schedule a guided tour of the home. The staff are willing to arrange personal and group tours outside of regular hours. During the tour, you will learn about the history of the home, what Huntsville was like in the 1800s, and see pictures and artifacts inside the home.
