Enjoy the view at this distinctive gazebo in Newhalem.
Located in Newhalem, Washington, the Temple of Power is a gazebo built from parts of the old Diablo Switching Station. It honors Newhalems' history as power providers for the entire city. It was built during the 1930s by Don Corson and served a big part of the history of Newhalem. Seattle City Light Power Company owns all of Nehalem and the three dams built above the city.
Newhalem is a company town, only letting in permanent residents if they work for the Skagit River Hydraulic project, or work a federal job in the nearby counties. Due to the town's size and status, there isn't any set postal service or established zip code. However, the residents can get their mail from the larger neighboring town of Rockport.
When you come to visit, be sure to pack a picnic lunch with you. The surrounding area is beautiful and has a gorgeous view of the valley. You can spend as little or as much time overlooking this valley. There is also a short hike nearby leading to Ladder Falls, where an old steam engine currently resides. This is a great spot to stretch your legs and hang out during a road trip through Washington.
