Enjoy the beauty of nature in the southernmost part of Texas.
South Padre Island is one of the most breathtaking cities along the Gulf Coast of Texas. This birding and nature center offers secluded and serene views of migrant birds and other wildlife creatures. Entrance fees are less than $10 for adults and children 3 and under get free admission. Along the boardwalk trail, guests can sit at 5 different bird blinds to get an up-close view of several bird species. This is a great place to take a sunset stroll or simply enjoy a breath of fresh air. There is also a five-story viewing tower, alligator sanctuary, butterfly garden, tortoise exhibit, and several guided birding tours offered throughout the year.
Please note that dogs are strictly prohibited on the boardwalks. The best time of year to see migrant birds is the end of summer through the fall. However, this is a year-round attraction that has several birds that permanently live here. Some of these birds include pelicans, egrets, herons, blackbirds, and mottled ducks. At the alligator sanctuary, there are several dozen juvenile gators plus two old-timers called big padre and lady laguna. The South Padre Island birding and nature center is run by a non-profit organization and its goal is to preserve and educate people about protecting natural habitats.
