Visit this National Historic Landmark in New Castle, Delaware.
The Read House & Gardens is part of the First State National Historical Park in northern Delaware. This 14,000-square-foot mansion in New Castle, Delaware, offers excellent views of the area from the rooftop. The Read House features domestic architecture from Philadelphia's grand federal period. Pay attention to the woodwork framing the doorways; you'll notice "punch and gouge" decoration, which was popular in the Philadelphia region in the 1800s. The home's interior has extraordinary plaster work on the ceilings, which William Thackara did. Thackara also did the plaster in Congress Hall in Philadelphia.
This historic home is open from 11 am to 4 pm, Thursday through Saturday. Guided tours start at the top of the hour, and the day's last tour begins at 3 pm. If you cannot take a tour, you are welcome to explore the gardens, which are open daily from dawn to dusk. Admission rates are $10 for adults, $8 for seniors (65+), and free for children under six.
