Take a ride on the world's highest cog railroad.
The Pikes Peak Cog Railway is located just west of Colorado Springs. This historic railway has been around since 1891 and takes visitors on a 3.5 hour (round-trip) journey to the summit of Pikes Peak. Many of the trees in the area are bristlecone pine, one of the oldest living tree species on earth. At the top, you can soak in 360-degree views of the mountains and the valley below. On a clear day, you may even be able to see the Cripple Creek mining camp off in the distance.
During your train ride, keep an eye out for wildlife such as elk, deer, bighorn sheep, marmots, and more. The route takes a 9-mile trip to the peak, but the elevation reaches 14,115 feet. You can either book a round-trip or one-way ticket, but be aware that it is no easy trek back down the mountain. If you love scenic train rides, be sure to book a ride on the Pikes Peak Cog Railway.
