Enjoy hiking and rock climbing in this central Colorado state park.
Castlewood Canyon State Park is home to the historic Castlewood Canyon Dam, built in the late 19th-century. The dam burst in 1933, and its remnants can still be seen today. This park features hiking trails that are good for every skill level and is an excellent spot to enjoy a picnic or rock climbing excursion with friends and family. Some of the rock faces in the canyon reach up to 60 feet high, but there are seasonal closures to certain climbing routes due to nesting raptors.
Hiking trails within the park vary from .5 to 4-miles long. Castlewood Canyon Falls Trail is a doable 1-mile loop trail with awesome views of a waterfall. As you hike, be watchful for coyotes, black bears, and golden eagles. Interestingly enough, this state park also has the highest population of turkey vultures in Colorado. Please note that leashed dogs are allowed on most of the trails, except the East Canyon Preservation Area. This park does not allow camping or overnight parking and is open daily from sunrise to sunset.
