Discover this photogenic place in the Great Smoky Mountains.
The Newfound Gap is located off U.S. Highway 441 in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. At just over 5,000 feet above sea level, the Newfound Gap is the lowest pass through the Great Smoky Mountains. It was initially thought that the Indian Gap was the lowest point, but in 1872, a geographer discovered this part of the mountain range and used a barometer to measure the changes in air pressure. This discovery is where the term "Newfound Gap" began.
Discover the vast beauty of the various ecosystems of the Newfound Gap, which include cove hardwood, pine-oak, northern hardwood, and evergreen spruce-fir forests. If you are an avid hiker, feel free to continue your journey onto the Appalachian Trail, which crosses over the Newfound Gap. You would be amiss to skip over this place while visiting the Great Smoky Mountains. Any outdoor lover should plan to visit the Newfound Gap while they're in the area.
