Hike to the highest point in the Great Smoky Mountains.
Clingmans Dome is located off U.S. Highway 441 in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The half-mile trail leading to the observation tower is paved yet steep. If you happen to be here on a clear day, the views from Clingmans Dome can span nearly a hundred miles in all directions. However, cloudy skies and rain are typical at Clingmans Dome, so bring a rain jacket when you visit (even if you're here in the summer). Temperatures at the top of the dome can be between 10 and 20 degrees cooler than the surrounding land below.
Please note that pets and bicycles are not allowed on the trail; you can only walk or hike up to the dome. There are a couple of other trailheads near the Clingmans Dome parking lot, including part of the Appalachian Trail and the Forney Ridge Trail. If you're planning to visit the Great Smoky Mountains, don't hesitate to add Clingmans Dome to your travel itinerary.
