Learn about the early pioneers who first traversed through the Oregon, Santa Fe, and California trails.
The National Frontier Trails Museum is located just east of Kansas City in Independence, Missouri. It is adjacent to the Historic Independence Square and features an interpretive center full of historical artifacts and displays depicting the stories of pioneers heading west during the mid-19th century. Those who moved to the northwest followed a 2,000-mile pathway known as the Oregon Trail, and the Santa Fe Trail was primarily a 900-mile trade route.
Visitors are welcome to watch the 17-minute film inside the theater, tour the exhibits, view wagon ruts, and even take a covered wagon tour (not available during inclement weather). Currently, this museum has limited hours and is only open Thursday through Saturday from 10 am to 4 pm. Group tours are available by appointment only and must be booked in advance. Please visit their website for further details. General admission rates are less than $10 per person, and children five and younger need no admission ticket. If you love history and are searching for a family-friendly attraction near Kansas City, look no further than the National Frontier Trails Museum.
