Morro Rock is a phenomenal natural wonder in Morro Bay, California. It is a volcanic plug at the entrance of Morro Bay Harbor that was formed around 23 million years ago and is protected as a state preserve and California Historical Landmark. The rock formation stands at more than 580 feet and visitors come from all over to see the impressive, eye-catching volcanic plug. Many bird species call Morro Rock home, including cormorants, seagulls, and falcons. Sea otters and sea lions are also often seen around the rock and there are fascinating tide pools here that boast so much life.

With the rock being so old, there is a ton of history tied to it. It was an important navigational point for sea travelers long ago, with one of the first documented sightings of it being in 1542. Lots of events like weddings and festivals take place at the beach near Morro Rock and it’s also a popular spot for commercial photoshoots. Visitors can explore around the base of the rock, but climbing it is prohibited.
