Snorkel near this ancient volcanic crater off the coast of Maui.
Molokini crater is said to be the remains of a volcanic eruption that occurred over 200,000 years ago. This crescent-shaped atoll can only be accessed via boat, but the clear waters surrounding it make this one of the best places to snorkel and scuba dive in Hawaii. Even if you aren't a scuba diver, the visibility of the water can be upwards of 100 feet, making for amazing snorkeling. There are several diving spots to choose from, including Tako Flats, Middle Reef, Flying Sea Cliffs, and more. Expect to see various tropical fish, small (and harmless) reef sharks, moray eels, manta rays, and the occasional octopus in these waters.
The boat ride can take up to an hour or so to get to Molokini Crater, depending on the harbor your boat will depart. Molokini Crater is also a Hawaii state seabird sanctuary. Birds often nest on the crater, so please don't disturb them. The Mokokini Crater is truly a sight to see. Don't miss out on the chance to snorkel here the next time you're in Maui, Hawaii.
