Visit an active archaeological site that is currently excavating a Native American Village.
The Mitchell Prehistoric Indian Village is an active archaeological site with crews excavating a 1,000-year-old Native American Village. This museum and the dig site are available for tours. Inside the museum, a short movie explains what took place in the area and the significance of the site. A tour guide escorts visitors around the area. It features a reconstructed lodge plus 1.5 million artifacts in the Boehnen Memorial Museum, depicting what daily life would have been like for the villagers. The main building has a video room, displays, and an authentic replica of a Mandan Native American home.
The dig site (Thomsen Center Archeodome) is enclosed, and visitors can watch archeology students at work with many of their discoveries on display. A large box outside allows kids to do their own dig and find an arrowhead to take home. Everyone can participate in and learn the art of spear-throwing or shoot an Atlatl. The gift shop, Shoppe Antiquary, has beautiful Native American art, jewelry, pottery, and more. Parking is just a short walk away on a path running along the shores of Lake Mitchell.
